Alloy Orchestra Special Screenings
Two Classic Silent Films, One Great Orchestra!
If you've never seen a silent film with a live music score by the world famous Alloy Orchestra, now's your chance. Alloy Orchestra is a three-man musical ensemble, writing and performing live accompaniment to classic silent films. Working with an outrageous assemblage of peculiar objects, they thrash and grind soulful music from unlikely sources.
Underworld
Alloy
Orchestra has revived another masterpiece of the silent cinema. Underworld,
the first film of noted director Joseph von Sternberg, won the first Academy
Award for Best Screenplay in 1927. Considered the first gangster
film, it became an important model for the many film noir and crime films
that followed. Rarely seen in decades, Alloy commissioned a sparkling new
print of this captivating screen gem. Premiering at the NY Film Festival
this fall, Alloy's newest score combines their signature high-energy
percussion with tense and dramatic melodies.
Underworld with live music by Alloy Orchestra will have one showing only on Friday, October 12th, at 7:00 p.m.
Phantom of the Opera
There is also a screening this same weekend. Alloy Orchestra will be performing with the original Phantom of the Opera (1925) with the original color sequences added, starring Lon Chaney. Chaney's classic performance of the Phantom is something to behold. While many silent films seem cheesy by today's standards, the acting in Phantom is more subdued. A live performance accompanying a silent picture is a rare treat, and the Alloy Orchestra does it best. With a variety of instruments at their disposal, this trio perfectly blends music with atmosphere, bringing the silent film to life. What's more, this was a restored version of Phantom, making it one of the most complete versions available anywhere. It is a great show for film fans of all ages.
Phantom of the Opera with live music by Alloy Orchestra will have one showing only on Saturday, October 13th, at 3:00 p.m.
All screenings take place at the newly restored Granada Theatre located at 1015 Minnesota Avenue in Kansas City, KS. 913-621-1800. The theatre is unbelieveable! Visit them online at: www.screenland.com
